Have you ever prayed to God to change your circumstances? Only to discover he wanted to change you first? We ask God for new opportunities, fresh direction, restored relationships, deeper faith. But what if the greatest obstacle to receiving what God wants to do isn't his willingness to give, but our willingness to grow? That's exactly where Jesus takes us in Luke chapter 5. Welcome to Beyond Belief, where we explore scripture, wrestle with the real questions, and discover how following Jesus transforms everyday life. Whether this is your first episode or you've been listening for a while, I'm glad you've joined me. My prayer is that by the end of our time together, you won't simply know more about the Bible, you'll know Jesus a little better, and you'll leave with a heart that's more open to what he's doing in your life. Our passage today is Luke 5, verse 33 to 39. At first glance, it appears to be a conversation about fasting. But Jesus is addressing something much deeper. He's revealing that the kingdom of God cannot be contained by old ways of thinking, old expectations, or hearts unwilling to be changed. And I think that's a message every one of us needs to hear. Several years ago, I bought a beautiful notebook. You know the kind. Thick pages, quality leather cover. It looked too nice to use. I convinced myself this wasn't going to be just another notebook. This was going to be the notebook, the one for my best ideas, prayers, sermon notes, and dreams. Then I opened the first page. And I couldn't write. What if I messed it up? What if my handwriting wasn't neat enough? What if my first idea wasn't important enough? So I waited. Days became weeks, weeks became months, eventually years passed. One afternoon I found that notebook in a drawer. It was still beautiful, still clean, still almost completely empty. And I suddenly realized something. I'd protected it so carefully that I'd never allowed it to fulfill the very purpose it was created for. I wonder how often we do the same thing with our lives. We protect what's familiar, we cling to routines, we defend expectations, we preserve our comfort. Sometimes that's wisdom, but sometimes it's fear disguised as faithfulness. Jesus understood that tendency better than anyone. As we come to today's passage, he's just shared a meal with tax collectors and sinners, people the religious leaders believed should have been avoided. That meal raises a question, not really about fasting, not really about religious tradition, but about whether people were ready for what God was doing right in front of them. Because here's the truth I hope you'll remember throughout today's episode. God isn't only interested in changing your circumstances, he's interested in increasing your capacity to receive what he wants to do in your life. That's what the image of new wine and new wineskins are really about. So, let's step into Luke's gospel together and discover why Jesus says new wine requires new wineskins, and why that truth is just as relevant today as it was thousands of years ago. Can I make an observation? I don't think most of us are afraid of change. I think we're afraid of what change might cost us. We'll pray for a better marriage until God starts changing us instead of our spouse. We'll ask for greater faith until that faith has to be exercised in uncertainty. We'll pray for patience, and suddenly every delay becomes another opportunity to grow. We love the promise of something new. We're just not excited about the process that gets us there. And spiritually, that's often where the struggle begins. Because God rarely changes our lives from the outside in. That's slower. Sometimes it's uncomfortable. But it's also the kind of change that lasts. Have you ever visited your childhood home years later? The room seems smaller, the hallway feels narrower. Nothing actually changed. You did. You grew. Your perspective became larger than the space you once occupied. I think spiritual growth works in much the same way. As we mature in Christ, our understanding deepens. Questions become more thoughtful. Faith becomes less about having all the answers and more about trusting the one who does. Healthy faith keeps growing. Healthy faith stays teachable. Healthy faith leaves room for God to surprise us. That's important because many of us don't struggle to believe in God. We struggle when God refuses to fit inside the expectations we've created for Him. That brings us back to Luke chapter 5. Just before today's conversation, Jesus had called Levi, a tax collector, to become one of his disciples. To the religious leaders, that decision made no sense. Tax collectors weren't respected. They were seen as traitors to their own people. Yet Jesus does not avoid Levi. He calls them. And Levi responds immediately. He leaves everything behind and throws a great banquet in Jesus' honor. The guest list wasn't made up of religious leaders. It was filled with tax collectors and other people society had written off. Jesus sits at the table with them. He shares a meal with them. He welcomes them before they've managed to put their lives back together. That is the beauty of the gospel. Jesus does not wait for people to become worthy before inviting them close. He meets them where they are and then begins to work on transformation. Everything Jesus was doing challenged the categories they had spent their lives protecting. So they asked him a question. And the disciples of the Pharisees do the same? But your disciples eat and drink. On the surface, it's a question about fasting. But underneath it lies a much deeper question. Jesus, why don't you do the things the way we've always done them? And if we're honest, isn't that still one of the questions we ask? Lord, why didn't you answer my prayer the way I expected? Why are you leading me down a path I never planned? Why does following you sometimes feel so different from what I imagined? They are honest questions. And Jesus doesn't dismiss honest questions. He uses them to reveal deeper truth. What he's about to say isn't simply going to answer a question about fasting. It's going to reveal the heart of the gospel itself. And it all begins with a wedding. Jesus doesn't answer the question about fasting directly. Instead, he gives three pictures: a bridegroom, a garment, and wineskins. Three everyday images, one extraordinary truth. He begins by asking, Can the guests of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? To us, that might seem like an unusual response, but everyone listening understood exactly what he meant. A wedding wasn't a time for mourning, it was a time for celebration. You didn't attend a wedding feast refusing food. You celebrated because something joyful was happening. Jesus is saying, The bridegroom is here. In other words, the long-awaited Messiah has arrived. This isn't the season for mourning. It's the season for rejoicing. But then Jesus adds something unexpected. Then they will fast. Even here, long before the cross, Jesus points ahead to his death. He knows what's coming. He knows the cost. Yet he keeps walking towards it. That is the heart of the gospel. Jesus was not surprised by the cross. He chose it. Love led him there. Then Jesus changes the picture. No one tears a piece from a new garment to patch an old one. Why? Because you drew in the new garment and the patch still wouldn't fit the old. Jesus isn't saying the Old Testament was wrong. Far from it. The law and the prophets prepared the way for him. But he didn't come to patch up the old covenant. He came to fulfill it. The gospel isn't God making our old lives a little better, it's making us new. And that's a difference we can easily miss. Many people think Christianity is about becoming a nicer version of themselves, a little more patient, a little kinder, a little more disciplined. And those things do matter. But they're not the gospel. The gospel is about new life. Jesus doesn't simply improve our behavior, he transforms our hearts. Then comes the image that is echoed through history. No one pours new wine into old wineskins. In Jesus' day, wine wasn't stored in glass bottles, it was stored in animal skins. When new wine fermented, it expanded. Fresh wineskins were flexible enough to stretch with it. Old wineskins weren't. They had become dry and brittle. If new wine was poured into them, they would split open. Both the wine and the wineskin would be lost. Jesus' point is beautifully simple. God is always at work. The question is whether our hearts remain flexible enough to receive what he's doing. The tragedy wasn't that God was doing something new. The tragedy was that many people were so committed to the familiar that they couldn't recognize the Messiah standing right in front of them. And before we do hard on them, could the same thing happen to us? Could we become so attached to routines, our traditions, our expectations, that we miss the fresh work God wants to do today? Following Jesus doesn't mean abandoning truth. It means remaining teachable. It means allowing God's word to shape us instead of assuming we've already learned everything He wants to teach us. Because the moment we stop growing, we stop stretching. And when we stop stretching, we risk becoming like old wineskins, unable to receive the new work God longs to do. Jesus closes with one final observation. For they say the old is better. What remarkable honesty. Jesus understands human nature. We naturally prefer what's familiar, even when what's familiar is holding us back. Growth always requires leaving something behind. That's true in every area of life. And it's certainly true in our walk with Christ. The invitation Jesus offers isn't simply to believe new things, it's to become new people. That is the miracle of a gospel. Not patched lives, not improved lives, new lives. So let's bring this home. It's easy to read this passage and point to the Pharisees. It's much harder to ask whether we sometimes think like they did. Because every one of us has an old wineskin. Maybe it's an old habit, an old fear, a disappointment you can't let go of. A belief that God could never use someone like you. Or perhaps it's simply the quiet conviction that you've already figured out how God works. Jesus invites us to hold all of those things with open hands, because the greatest barrier to what God wants to do tomorrow is often that we're unwilling to release today. I once watched a father teaching his young son to catch a ball. He stood only a few meters away and gently tossed the ball toward him. Each time, the little boy squeezed his fist tightly shut. The ball bounced off his hands and rolled into the grass. Again and again, the father smiled, picked it up, and threw it back. Finally, he walked over, knelt beside his son, and said something simple. You can't catch what's been given if your hands are already full. That's one to remember. And I've often wondered how many times God has stood before me with something good while my hands were tightly wrapped around yesterday, around my plans, my disappointments, my need to stay in control. We ask God to fill our lives, but are we willing to let Him empty what no longer belongs there? Perhaps you're praying for peace while holding on to resentment. Perhaps you're asking for direction while refusing to take the first step. Perhaps you're praying for God to do something new while insisting it must look exactly like what he did before. The question isn't whether God is at work. The question is whether we're willing to receive his work. Throughout Scripture, God often prepares the person before he delivers the promise. Moses spent years in the wilderness before leading Israel. David was anointed long before he wore the crown. Joseph dreamed of greatness before he endured the prison. Even the disciples spent years walking with Jesus before they were ready to carry the gospel to the world. Preparation is not God's way of delaying his purpose, it's his way of strengthening us for it. Perhaps that's where you are today. You feel stretched, you feel uncertain, you wonder why God hasn't answered your prayer yet. What if he isn't withholding his blessings? What if he's enlarging your capacity to carry it? That doesn't make the waiting easy, but it does give the waiting purpose. So let me ask you one simple question. Where has your heart become less teachable? Where have you quietly stopped expecting God to surprise you? Those are not questions meant to produce guilt. Because God is not looking for perfect people, is looking for willing people, people whose hearts remain soft, people who are humble enough to keep learning, people who can still pray, Lord, if there's something you want to teach me, I'm listening. That's what the new wineskin looks like. It's a heart that's surrendered, a heart that's available, a heart that's ready for whatever God wants to pour into it. And that's the kind of heart Jesus came to create. As we come to the end of today's conversation, I'd like to leave you with three simple questions. Not questions to make you feel guilty, but questions to help you keep listening to God this week. First, where have I become too comfortable? Not comfortable in Christ, comfortable in routine, comfortable in assumptions, comfortable with the idea that I've already learned everything God wants to teach me. The healthiest disciples never stop being disciples. The second question is this What am I trying to preserve that God may be trying to transform? Perhaps it's an old hurt, an old identity, a fear you've carried for years, or maybe it's simply the vision of yourself you've become comfortable being. Remember, God never asked us to let go without offering something better in return. And finally, what is one step of obedience I can take this week? Not ten steps, just one, one conversation, one act of forgiveness, one invitation, one prayer, one decision to trust God where you've been trying to stay in control. Big transformations often begin with small acts of obedience. Before we finish, I'd like to pray with you. If you're able, simply open your hands on your lap. Not because there's anything special about the posture, but because sometimes our bodies can express what our hearts long to say. Let's pray. Father, I thank you for loving us enough not to leave us where we are. Thank you that through Jesus, you don't simply patch up our lives, you make them new. When our hearts have become rigid, make them soft again. Where we've become fearful, teach us to trust. Where we've become comfortable, give us the courage to follow wherever you lead. Help us to become the kind of people who can receive everything you desire to pour into our lives. In Jesus' name. Amen. As you go into this week, remember this. God may not always change your circumstances as quickly as you'd like, but he is always at work changing you. That's the good news. Because transformed people change families, they change churches, they change workplaces, they change communities, and that is how God changes the world. So this week, stay teachable, stay available, keep saying yes to Jesus. Because every yes stretches your heart just a little more for what he wants to do next.
