Have you ever noticed how easy it is to confuse change with transformation? We make a decision, we turn over a new leaf, we break a habit we've been fighting for years, we finally get our lives organized, our priorities straight, our routine back on track, and for a little while, it feels like everything is different. But then, somehow, we find ourselves right back where we started. Maybe it's the same anger that keeps surfacing. Maybe it's the same insecurity you've tried so hard to silence. Maybe it's the addiction you thought you left behind. Or maybe it's just that nagging feeling that even though you've cleaned up on the outside, something on the inside still feels empty. Why does that happen? Is it because we didn't try hard enough? Because our faith wasn't strong enough? Or is there something deeper going on that Jesus wants us to see? Today, we're stepping into a fascinating and if we're honest, one of the most misunderstood teachings Jesus ever gave. At first glance, it sounds mysterious. It talks about unclean spirits, an empty house, and a warning that can leave you with more questions and answers. But if we'll slow down long enough to listen, we'll discover that this passage isn't really about fear. It's about fullness. It's about what happens after freedom. And it's about why simply getting rid of the wrong things isn't enough if we never allow God to fool us with the right things. I'm really glad you're here. Let's begin. Have you ever walked into a house that looked absolutely perfect from the outside? Fresh banged, beautiful garden, spotless windows. Everything looked exactly as it should. But then someone opened the front door, and you realized that nobody had lived there for months. The silence was almost unsettling. There was no laughter, no warmth, no life. It was clean, it was orderly, but it was empty. It's amazing how something can look so complete and yet be missing the one thing that actually gives it life. I wonder if that's ever true of us. Not on the outside. We've become pretty good at managing that. We know how to smile, we know the right words to say, we know how to look like everything is okay. But inside, inside can be a totally different story. Maybe you've managed to overcome something that once controlled your life. Maybe you've stopped destructive habits. Maybe you've distanced yourself from unhealthy relationships. Maybe you've finally found some order after years of chaos. And yet there's still this quiet feeling that something is missing. It's hard to explain. You know you've changed, but you don't quite feel transformed. If that's ever been your experience, then I think today's conversation is going to speak directly to your heart. Because Jesus once told a story that sounds strange at first, but once you understand what he's saying, you begin to realize he isn't talking about haunted houses. He's talking about us. You know, one of the things I love most about the Gospels is that Jesus has this incredible ability to take ordinary pictures from everyday life and use them to reveal extraordinary spiritual truths. A farmer scattering seed, a shepherd searching for one lost sheep, a father waiting for his son to come home, a tiny mustard seed becoming a grape tree. Simple pictures, timeless truths. And today, he gives us another picture: a house, not a palace, not a temple, just a house. Something everyone listening could immediately understand. But hidden inside that simple picture is one of the most important lessons about spiritual growth you'll ever hear. Because here's the truth. Most of us spend a lot of time asking God to remove things from our lives. Lord, take away my fear, take away my anxiety, take away this temptation, take away this anger. And those are all good prayers. They're necessary prayers. But what if we've been asking only half the question? What if God doesn't simply want to empty us from what is wrong, but fill us with something infinitely better? That's where Jesus is taking us today. And honestly, I don't think this passage is meant to scare us. I think it's meant to invite us into a fuller life than many of us have ever imagined. A while back, I decided I was finally going to sort out my storage room. Now, if you're anything like me, you'll understand that this wasn't just a quick tidy up. This was one of those projects where you stand at the door, take a deep breath, and think, right, today is the day. Boxes came out. Old tools I'd forgotten I ever owned. Extension cords that somehow multiplied when I wasn't looking. Paintons from projects that had been finished years ago. And then there were those mystery boxes. You know the ones. You open them hoping to discover treasure, and instead you find old cables that belong to devices you no longer own. Why do we keep those? I'm convinced there's a little voice in every storage area that whispers, you might need that one day. Spoiler alert, you probably won't. By lunchtime, the driveway looked like a hardware store had just exploded. But by the end of the day, the room looked incredible. Everything was in place. The floor was visible again. And I remember standing there, arms folded, feeling strangely proud of myself. I actually walked back inside just so I could come out again and admire it one more time. Tell me I'm not the only one who's done that. For about three weeks, every time I opened the door, I smiled. Then life happened. A toolbox got left on the floor. Something arrived that needed temporary storage. A box got pushed into the corner, and little by little, without ever noticing, the clutter came back. One thing at a time. Until one afternoon I opened the room, looked around, and realized I was standing in exactly the same mess I'd worked so hard to clean up. It wasn't because I hadn't cleaned properly. The cleaning had been real. The problem was that I never changed the habits that kept filling it with clutter. And as I stood there that day, I couldn't help thinking, isn't that how life works sometimes? We deal with the symptoms, but we never really change what keeps producing them. We remove the clutter, but we never replace the pattern. And that's when I realized my storage room had quietly become a sermon. Not because God speaks through power tools, although sometimes I wonder, but because he has this wonderful habit of taking ordinary moments and using them to reveal extraordinary truths. And that's exactly where Jesus meets us in Luke chapter 11. Because he's about to tell us that cleaning the house was never the end of the story. Maybe that's why the storeroom story resonated with me more than I expected. Because if I'm being honest, it wasn't really about the storeroom at all. It was about me. And if I'm even more honest, I think it's about all of us. Have you ever noticed how much of our lives is spent trying to get rid of things? We want to get rid of stress, get rid of debt, get rid of anxiety, get rid of unhealthy habits, get rid of guilt, get rid of shame, get rid of the things that keep us awake at two o'clock in the morning. And there's nothing wrong with wanting freedom. Freedom is one of the greatest gifts Jesus came to give. But somewhere along the way, many of us began believing that freedom simply means removing something. If I can just stop doing this, if I can just get over that, if I can just break this habit, then everything will be okay. But life has a funny way of exposing the limits of their thinking. Maybe you've finally forgiven someone only to discover that bitterness quietly found another way back in. Maybe you've overcome one temptation, only to find yourself struggling with something completely different. Maybe you've escaped one unhealthy relationship, then repeated the same pattern with someone else. It's frustrating, isn't it? Sometimes we wonder, why do I keep ending up back here? Why do I keep circling the same mountain? Why does it feel like one step forward and two steps back? All of those are honest questions. And here's what I love about Jesus. He never brushed aside honest questions. He always answered them by going deeper than people expected. People wanted to talk about behavior. Jesus talked about the heart. People wanted him to discuss rules. Jesus talked about relationships. People wanted quick fixes. Jesus offered lasting transformation. And I think that's exactly what he's doing here. Because the story he's about to tell isn't really about evil spirits first. It's about empty hearts. It's about what happens when we experience freedom, but never step into fullness. Have you ever noticed that nature doesn't like empty spaces? Leave a garden unattended, and weeds don't politely ask for permission, they just grow. Leave a house abandoned and dust begins to settle. The paint starts peeling, the roof begins to leak. Life is a way of filling empty spaces. Spiritually, it's no different. And that's where Jesus takes us next. Listen to these words carefully. Not because they're difficult to understand, but because they're incredibly easy to misunderstand. Jesus says, When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, I will return to the house I left. When it arrives, it finds the house swept, clean, and put in order. Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. Now, if you've grown up in church, you've probably heard this passage taught in a lot of different ways. And if you've never been around church very much, this might sound like something straight out of a movie. An evil spirit, an empty house, seven more spirits? It's easy to get distracted by the details. But whenever you're reading the Bible, it's worth asking a simple question. What point is Jesus actually trying to make? Because Jesus wasn't trying to satisfy our curiosity about the unseen world. He was revealing something about the human heart. Notice what he says. Everything appears in order. From the outside, it looks like success. But then comes a detail that's easy to miss. The house is empty. Jesus doesn't criticize the cleaning. In fact, cleaning is a good thing. He doesn't criticize putting the house in order. Order is a good thing too. The problem isn't that the house is clean. The problem is nobody lives there. That's the plot twist. Because suddenly the story isn't about how dirty the house was, it's about who occupies it. And I wonder if that's the question Jesus still asks us today. Not how clean does your life look, but rather, who lives there? There's a world of difference between those two questions. One focuses on appearance, the other focuses on relationship. One asks us to perform, the other invites us to surrender. And honestly, it's much easier to clean up appearances than it is to hand Jesus the keys to every room in our lives. Maybe that's why this passage feels so uncomfortable. Because Jesus isn't impressed by empty religion. He's inviting us into something far better. Think about the people Jesus spent his time with: tax collectors, fishermen, people with messy stories, people who had failed publicly, people who carried shame. He never said, Get your life perfectly organized and then come to me. Instead, he said, Come to me and let me make you new. That's the order. Not clean yourself up so God can love you, but receive his love and let his presence transform you from the inside out. There's a huge difference. One produces exhaustion, the other produces life. I want you to picture something with me. Imagine your heart as a house. Walk through it slowly. The front room where everyone is welcome, the kitchen where conversations happen, the hallway lined with memories. Then the rooms nobody else sees. The room-marked fear, the room-marked regret, the room where you've stored disappointment because you didn't know what else to do with it. Maybe there's a room you've kept locked for years. Not because you're hiding it from people, but because you're convinced that if Jesus ever saw what was behind that door, he'd walk away. But here's the gospel. Jesus already knows what's behind every door, every memory, every wound, every failure, every hidden corner. And still, he knocks. Not carrying a checklist, not looking for reasons to reject you, not waiting to remind you of everything you've done wrong. He knocks because he wants to come home. Maybe we've misunderstood salvation. Maybe it isn't simply Jesus rescuing us from something. Maybe it's Jesus moving into someone, into you, into me, into every room we've spent years trying to renovate on our own. Because Christianity has never been about becoming a slightly improved version of yourself. It's about becoming the place where the presence of God delights to dwell. Jesus didn't just come to clean your heart, He came to make it his home. That little phrase Jesus uses, swept clean, and put in order, has stayed with me all week. Because we like things that are neat and tidy. We like quick fixes. We like before and after photos. We like stories that wrap up within 30 minutes with happy endings and uplifting music. But life rarely works that way. Real transformation never happens in an instant. It happens one surrender day at a time. One conversation with God at a time. One act of obedience at a time. One choice to trust him when everything in us wants to run away. And that's why I don't think Jesus is criticizing the person in the story. I think he's grieving for them. Because they experience freedom, but they stop there. They celebrate at the empty house without ever inviting the owner home. There's a difference between being delivered from something and being devoted to someone. And those two things sound similar, but they're not. One can happen in a moment, the other becomes a journey of a lifetime. Have you ever met someone whose life was completely transformed by Jesus? Not just cleaned up, transformed. There's something different about them. You can't always explain it. Sometimes they're not the loudest person in the room. They're not always the most talented. But there's a peace about them, a steadiness, a gentleness, a joy that doesn't seem to depend on circumstances. Have you ever wondered where that comes from? It's not because they've never struggled. It's not because life has been easy. It's because they're not trying to live the Christian life alone. The house isn't empty anymore. The Holy Spirit lives there. And when the Holy Spirit is at home, everything else changes. Not overnight, but over time. I think that's one of the greatest misconceptions about following Jesus. We sometimes imagine Christianity as God handing us a list. Here are the things to stop doing. Here are the things to start doing. Good luck. But that's never been the gospel. The gospel isn't God handing us instructions from a distance, it's God giving us his presence. That's why Jesus could say in the Gospel of John, I will not leave you as orphans. He wasn't simply promising better advice, he was promising himself. Imagine for a moment that someone gave you the keys to an old lighthouse. It had stood on the edge of the coast for decades. Strong walls, beautiful architecture, but the light had gone out years ago. You spend weeks restoring it, you repair the stonework, you repaint every room, you replace broken windows, you polish every railing until it shines. People stop and admire your work. It's beautiful, they say. It looks brand new. But every evening, ships still drift towards the rocks. Why? Because the building was never the point. The light was. Without the light, it's just another empty tower. And I wonder if that's what Jesus is trying to show us. We can polish the outside of our lives until everyone applauds. We can become respectable, disciplined, successful, even religious. But if the light of Christ isn't burning within us, we've missed the whole purpose. God didn't create you simply to look good. He created you to shine. Jesus said, You are the light of the world. Not because of who you are, but because of who lives in you. Perhaps that's why so many people feel exhausted. Not because they're bad people, not because they don't love God, but because they've been trying to produce through effort what can only come through his presence. Have you noticed that? We work harder to be patient, harder to be joyful, harder to be loving, harder to forgive. And the harder we try, the more frustrated we become. Because fruit doesn't grow through striving, it grows through abiding. Jesus didn't say, try harder, he said, remain in me. There's such freedom in that. Because suddenly the Christian life isn't about pretending to be somebody you're not, it's about staying close to the one who is changing you from the inside out. Let me ask you a question. What if the very thing you've been praying for isn't what God wants to give you? I know that sounds strange, but stay with me. What if you've been praying, Lord, take away my fear? And God is saying, I want to fill you with my perfect love. What if you've been praying, take away my anxiety? And he's saying, I want to fill you with my peace. Take away my anger. I want to fill you with my gentleness. Take away my loneliness. I want to fill you with my presence. Do you hear the difference? One is asking God to empty something, the other is allowing to fill it. And maybe, just maybe, that's why some of our victories don't last. Because we've celebrated the empty rooms without inviting Jesus to make himself at home. When Jesus saves us, he doesn't simply evict the darkness, he moves in. That is the miracle. Not that the house becomes empty, that it becomes occupied by the living God. The Christian life isn't about keeping sin out, it's about letting Christ in. So, what does that actually look like on a Tuesday morning? Because this passage isn't just theology, it's deeply practical. It looks like opening your Bible before opening your social media. It looks like whispering a prayer before the first meeting of the day. It looks like choosing forgiveness even when resentment feels justified. It looks like worshiping while you're driving to work. It looks like inviting Jesus into conversations, decisions, disappointments, and ordinary moments. Not because you're trying to earn his presence, but because he's already made his home with you. Sometimes we think spiritual growth happens in the extraordinary moments. The conferences, the retreat, the emotional worship service. And thank God for those moments. But more often than not, real transformation happens quietly, in kitchens, in offices, in traffic, around the dinner table, in hospital rooms, in ordinary moments where over and over again we simply choose to say, Jesus, this room belongs to you too. And one room becomes another and another. Until, before you even realize it, the whole house begins to look different. Not because you've been trying to renovate it alone, but because the owner has been living there all along. You know, the longer I follow Jesus, the more I've realized something. Most of us don't wake up one morning and decide we're going to drift away from God. It rarely happens like that. It's much quieter, much more subtle. It begins with busyness. Life gets full. We miss a day in God's word, then another. Prayer becomes rushed. Worship becomes occasional. Our conversations with Jesus become shorter and shorter until one day we realize we've been talking about Him far more than we've been actually talking to Him. And if we're not careful, we can mistake activity for intimacy. We can be busy doing things for God while slowly neglecting life with God. I think that's one of the greatest dangers Jesus is warning us about. Because an empty house doesn't become occupied overnight. It becomes vulnerable, one unattended room at a time. Have you ever walked through a house that's been abandoned for years? At first glance, it doesn't look so bad. A little dust, a cracked window, some peeling paint. But then you look closer. Moisture has crept into the walls. The timber has begun to rot. The foundations have weakened. It didn't happen all at once. It happened slowly, quietly, almost invisibly. That's how spiritual drift often happens. Not through one catastrophic decision, but through a thousand small compromises. A thousand moments where we stop inviting Jesus into the ordinary spaces of our lives. And here's what I've learned: the enemy doesn't always need to destroy your faith. Sometimes he's just content to distract it. Because a distracted believer is often an ineffective believer. We become so busy managing our schedules, our careers, our finances, our families, that we forget the one who gives life to all of it. Then we wonder why we feel dry, why worship feels routine, why prayer feels empty, why joy feels distant. Maybe the problem isn't that God has moved away. Maybe we've simply stopped making room for him. Can I tell you something that has brought me incredible hope? God has never been intimidated by empty rooms. Think about it. From the very beginning of Scripture, God specializes in bringing life into places that seem empty. In Genesis, the earth was formless and empty. The Spirit of God hovered over the waters, and creation began. In Ezekiel, there was a valley full of dry bones, hopeless, lifeless, scattered. Then God's breath entered them, and they stood up as a mighty army. At the tomb of Lazarus, there was silence, death, finality. And Jesus stood outside that grave, called one man's name, and life walked out. Again and again, our God steps into empty places and fills them with life. So why would your heart be any different? Why would your story be beyond his reach? Because it isn't. It never has been. Maybe today Jesus is standing at the front door of your heart. Not because he's never been there before. Perhaps you've walked with him for years. Maybe you've served in church, led Bible studies, raised your children to love him. Or maybe you're listening today and you've never really opened that door at all. Wherever you find yourself, I want you to hear this. Jesus isn't standing there with condemnation. He isn't holding a list of your failures. He's not replaying your worst moments. He's not waiting for you to prove yourself. He's simply saying, May I come in. Not so that he can inspect the house. Not so he can criticize the mess. Not so he can point out everything you've neglected. He wants to come in because he loves making broken places beautiful. He loves bringing peace where chaos has lived. He loves replacing shame with grace, fear with courage, restlessness with peace, death with life. And here's the beautiful irony. We spend so much of our lives trying to make ourselves presentable to God. While God has been trying to make himself present in us. That is the gospel. Not improved behavior, not polished religion, not trying harder. The gospel is this God with us. And because of Jesus, it becomes God in us. I honestly believe that's what Jesus wanted his listeners to understand that day. They were fascinated by the miracle. Jesus wanted them to discover the relationship. Because miracles can change your circumstances. Only God's presence changes your life. So let me ask you a question. Not as a preacher, not as someone trying to make you feel guilty. Just another traveler learning how to follow Jesus. Who has the keys to your house? Not one room, not the Sunday morning room, not the room where everyone sees the best version of you, the whole house. The room where fear still hides, the room where disappointment still lingers, the room where you've stored old wounds because you don't know what else to do with them. The room you've convinced yourself is too messy for God. Could it be that Jesus isn't asking you to clean it first? Could it be that he is asking you to simply unlock the door? Because here's what I've discovered. Jesus never asks us to renovate our hearts before he moves in. He moves in, and then, together, room by room, day by day, he begins transforming the house from the inside out. And somehow, what once felt impossible starts becoming natural. Not because we've become stronger, but because his life is now shaping ours. As you go into this week, I don't want you to remember everything I've said. If you only remember one thing, let it be this. When Jesus spoke about the empty house, he wasn't trying to frighten people, he was inviting them into fullness. He wasn't saying, try harder to stay clean. He was saying, Don't settle for an empty life when I can fill it. That is the invitation. Not survival, not maintenance, but abundant life. The kind of life that overflows into your marriage, into your friendships, into your workplace, into your conversations, into every ordinary Tuesday and Thursday and Sunday. Because when Jesus is truly at home with us, his life begins spilling out of us. And that's when people don't just notice that we've changed, they encounter Christ through us. An empty heart can be vulnerable. A heart filled with Christ becomes unshakable. Maybe today you've realized that you've been spending all your energy trying to clean up your life, trying to be a better Christian, trying harder, trying to overcome that one sin. Trying to prove to God, and maybe even to yourself, that you've changed. And perhaps through this passage, Jesus has been gently whispering, You've been carrying a burden I never asked you to carry. Because the Christian life was never meant to be lived through sheer determination. It was always meant to be lived through dependence. That's why Jesus says in John 15, verse 5, Apart from me, you can do nothing. Those words can sound intimidating until you remember who said them. The one who also said, Abide in me. In other words, don't try to live this life without me. I never expected you to. And now, may you never mistake a clean life for a full life. May you discover that the greatest miracle Jesus offers isn't simply freedom from the past, it's his presence in your present. May your heart become more than a house that's been swept clean. May it become a home where Christ is welcomed every single day. May his peace guard your mind when it feels uncertain. May his joy strengthen you when your circumstances don't make sense. May his wisdom guide your decisions. May his grace be stronger than your failures. And may the Holy Spirit continue, day by day, room by room, shaping you into the person God created you to be. And wherever this week takes you, may you never forget this beautiful truth. You were never created simply to avoid darkness. You were created to be filled with the light of the world.
